OpenAI is currently testing a new group chat feature within ChatGPT, initially rolling out to users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. This feature is designed to replicate the experience of a natural, collaborative conversation – whether you’re planning a vacation, brainstorming a home renovation, or deciding on a night out. It also allows for seamless collaboration with classmates or colleagues, such as having ChatGPT assist with outlining a report based on shared research and notes. To initiate a group chat, simply tap the person icon in the top right corner of any conversation, regardless of whether you’re starting a new chat or building upon an existing one. Participants can add up to 20 individuals to the group, and each person will need to create a profile, providing their name, username, and a photo. Crucially, the group creator retains control, with the ability to mute or remove participants at any time. Recognizing the need for responsible use, OpenAI has implemented automatic safeguards for users under 18 to limit exposure to sensitive content. The conversations themselves are powered by GPT-5.1 Auto. OpenAI has been diligently working to ensure ChatGPT understands the nuances of group chats – it now recognizes when to listen and when to contribute, and you can always bring it back into the conversation by simply saying “ChatGPT.” The company plans to continue refining the feature based on feedback from these early testers before expanding its availability.
